The Aztecs started off in Aztlan, a city located in North West Mexico. They decided to leave their home in around 1313. The Aztecs moved from place to place constantly, so they had no official land as their home. Then, one day, Tenoch had a vision about where they should build their new city. So they built their capital city in around 1325, and they called it Tenochtitlan, which was located on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco, Mexico.
Physical Features
Tenochtitlan was only a small piece of land. Surrounding it was a freshwater lake, along with some swampy marshes here and there.
Climate
The average climate in Tenochtitlan was about 12 C (degrees celsius). In the winter time, the temperature was really cold, and sometimes developed frost. In the summer time, it got really hot. Rainfall occurred mostly in the months April to October.
Time Period in Which the Aztecs Thrived
When the Aztecs had discovered their land in 1325, they were determined to build their city. They finished building their city in 1375. The civilization was then thriving in the year 1519, with more than 60,000 people in the city on a daily basis.
